You are currently viewing Apple: what’s up with the IOS 12.5.7

On January 23 2023, Apple went a bit of an extra mile (or yard…) when releasing the IOS 12.5.7 upgrade… But was all that about?Every Apple device from September 2018 to September 2020 was equipped with IOS 12. Namely, Iphone 5S, Ipad Mini 2 ()and everything in between) are concerned here… Including Iphone 7 8 and SE first-generation, Ipod 6 and 7 and pretty any Ipad… Given such an extensive range, you could assume Apple was forced to act!

Arguably, most of those devices could simply be upgraded to up to IOS 15… Except for Iphone 5S, Iphone 6, Ipod 6 and Iphone 6 Plus… Such a range of devices being used prompted Apple to release another upgrade for an already outdated version of IOS.

Why did Apple release the IOS 12.5.7 upgrade in 2023?

Pretty simply, with that particular release, Apple attended to some serious security issues impacting the Safari web browser. Particularly its page render engine, Webkit. As a matter of fact, he browser was prone to execute malicious code included in a webpage,… That could result in serious security concern for the user.

Iphone 6 is still popular in the used and refurbished market. Therefore t’s understandable that Apple deemed it necessary to release one more update for IOS 12. Indeed, Iphone 6S is still retailing high of around 200 dollars. Apple also released a specific update for IOS 15 (IOS 15.7.2). This tackles the issue of the more recent devices such as Iphone 6S, Iphone 7 and Iphone 7S. Also Iphone SE (first gen.) and Ipad Pro, Ipad Air, Ipad 5, Ipad mini 4 and Ipod Touch 7. Finally, IOS 16 was also corrected in December 2022 to address the security concern.

Is it worth it upgrading my version of IOS 12?

If you use a version of IOS version older than 12.5.7, 15.7.2 or 16.3, you definitely need to upgrade to the latest version available. This will give you the chance to avoid major security risk on your device.
